Life Sentiment in Public Housing Estates

The research was based on 800 cati-interviews with tenants of public housing in Vienna carried out in April 2008. The sample was divided into tenants of larger residential houses (at least 350 apartments) and smaller ones (from 10 to 130 apartments).

The aim of the study was to investigate the subjective attitudes and satisfaction of residents of public housing concerning the questions of security, the relationship to neighbours and the image of this specific form of housing.

One main result was that the satisfaction of the tenants is much better than the image of public housing in general. The interviewed residents have painfully noticed a clear deterioration of the image of public housing within the last years.

Another important result is that about 80% classify the interrelation between themselves and their neighbours as "friendly" or at least "polite". 14% are rating their relationships as "detached", and only 3% as "aggressive". If there are any conflicts they usually take place between residents of different generations or different cultural backgrounds.
