Workshop 1: Self-determined housing for older people
Thursday, 16 Juni 2005, 14.00-17.30
Media-Tower Vienna, Taborstraße 1-3 (15th floor), 1020 Vienna

Housing for older people
Vienna, like most European cities, is undergoing continuous demographic changes. For the next years an increasing aging process is foreseeable which, however, will be differently pronounced depending on the districts. In order to offer the growing number of older people the opportunity for a self-determined life innovative models are necessary in particular in the field of housing. Barrier-free construction, security of supply, the encouragement of social contacts and the integration of older people into their social environment - these are the guiding themes to be taken into account when constructing new housing or modernising the existing stock.

Regarding to this main theme the following research projects were presented:

  • Sell-determined housing for older people: International housing models as solution approaches for the City of Vienna
  • Barrier-free housing
  • Demographic aging and the urban fabric in Vienna
  • Home-Services as challenge and chance: Evaluation of concrete experiences - potentials for Vienna

The Vienna Housing Research Days
Vienna has not only a long tradition of social housing and of successful models to adapt living space to contemporary requirements; the City of Vienna is also proud of its comprehensive research programme to continuously evaluate and redevelop its housing and urban renewal policy.

The workshop "Self-determined housing for older people" represented the kick-off of a new series of events: The "Vienna Housing Research Days" will provide an experts' platform for the presentation and discussion of recent research projects, realised in the framework of the Vienna Housing Research Programme. Thus, a further step towards an intensified dialogue and networking among the local and regional scientific community will be taken.
