Workshop 16: We’re outgrowing our borders – strategies for housing in the metropolitan region
Thursday November 30, 2017 | 9:00-13:00
TU Wien | Kuppelsaal | Karlsplatz 13 | 1040 Wien

Not only the population of the City of Vienna is growing for many years, but also the conurbation area is witnessing a dynamic development. Already today the urban agglomeration of Vienna is an interwoven metropolitan area in which administrative borders play a diminishing role. The demand for high-quality housing in well-connected locations with decent infrastructure endowment is increasing – within and outside the city borders – and underlines the importance of close cooperation between the municipalities of the metropolitan region. The Vienna Housing Research Day 2017, therefore, focussed on the development of common solutions beyond formal boundaries.

A number of recent projects funded through the Vienna Housing Research Programm address aspects of this theme and deal a.o. with questions like:

  • What changes in terms of demographic, economic and logistic structures go along with the dynamic growth of the urban agglomeration?
  • How to maintain the high standards of social housing in the growing metropolitan area?
  • How can a compact, land-saving zoning policy and settlement development contribute to the affordability of housing?
  • What new opportunities can develop through intensified cooperation in the metropolitan region?

In her talk, Nicola Schelling, Regional Director of the regional association “Verband Region Stuttgart” gave an insight into her experience from cross-border housing policy in the metropolitan region of Stuttgart.
